Weather Postpones Cherokee Speedway Event

Weather Postpones Cherokee Speedway Event

EASTABOGA, Ala. — A not-so-favorable weather forecast has forced series and track officials to postpone a $10,000-to-win Newsome Raceway Parts-sponsored Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series event scheduled June 10-12 at Cherokee Speedway in Gaffney, S.C.

The race was slated to be the sixth of the season for the Eastaboga, Ala-based traveling circuit, and would have been the fourth event on a 10-race schedule for the E-Z-GO $100,000+ Challenge, which is a “series within a series” that features 10 races that each pay at least $10,000 to the winner.

“It’s another disappointment for all of us in what has become a season dotted with these weather-related decisions to postpone or cancel races,” series director Adam Stewart said. “We were really looking forward to having our organization become a part of the incredible history that is associated with Cherokee Speedway, but if there’s a bright side to this turn of events, we’re already working closely with [track promoter] Scott Childress to reschedule the weekend. He definitely wants to have this race and views this only as a temporary setback, so we feel confident that fans in the area will receive another opportunity to watch our brand of touring series racing. We’ll look forward to bringing it to them in the future.”

It’s the third postponement of the season for the touring series, which has already had events at Greenville (Miss.) Speedway and Boothill (La.) Speedway postponed due to weather. Boothill’s $10,000-to-win Battle of Boothill event, which met its fate with postponement due to an ill-timed gas supply shortage after the Colonial Pipeline was knocked offline for a few days in mid-May, has been rescheduled to Oct. 14-16, while a date for Greenville hasn’t been announced.

Additionally, two other events at Volusia County (Fla.) Speedway and Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway were cancelled by inclement weather on the original nine-race Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series, which awarded a separate championship title claimed by Dylan Knowles of Lanett, Ala.

Jason Welshan of Maryville, Tenn., is the current points leader on the regular touring series, while Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., holds the advantage in the chase for the E-Z-GO $100,000+ Challenge.

The next touring series events for the 17-year-old Crate Racin' USA organization will be the annual Salute to America Nationals scheduled July 1 at Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway, July 2 at Moulton Speedway in Danville, Ala., July 3 at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala. and July 4 at Cochran (Ga.) Motor Speedway.

The economical Chevrolet Performance 602 and 604 Circle Track Engine is utilized by competitors in the various divisions presented by Crate Racin’ USA. It’s in stock and available for free, next-day delivery from Newsome Raceway Parts in Hartsville, S.C.
