Headingley, MB native Ricky Weiss won his fourth race of the 2024 season and his third straight $10,000-to-win Crate Racin' USA event of the season at Magnolia. Weiss has been red-hot, collecting $30,000 in winnings since June 21st, when he captured a $10,000 win at Tazewell, followed by another $10,000 win the next night at 411 in the J.T. Kerr Memorial. This win marks his fourth career series victory, all achieved in the 2024 season; his first came back at I-75 Raceway in April.
The weekend started for Weiss on Friday evening when he captured the STAKT by CV Racing Products - Fastest Overall Qualifier with a time of 14.238, securing pole position in his Chevrolet Performance Heat. He went on to win Chevrolet Performance Heat race 2, locking himself into the 75-lap main event on Saturday night. Corey Neil Jr. (Bridge City, TX), Joseph Brown (Pine Mountain Valley, GA), and Spencer Hughes (Meridian, MS) also secured heat wins that Friday night.
Weiss and Neil Jr. led the field to the green flag in the 20th Annual Governor's Cup. Weiss took the early lead and led the first 16 laps before former series champion Mark Whitener (Middleburg, FL) made a pass for the lead in turns 3 and 4. However, the caution flag flew on the next lap as Will Roland of Jasper, GA slowed on the track. On the restart, Weiss fought back and retook the lead from Whitener with 55 laps to go. Another caution flew on lap 29 as Jake Rainey spun on the back straightaway, bunching the field back together with 46 laps remaining.
When the green flag waved again, Spencer Hughes battled Mark Whitener for second place, allowing Weiss to slightly extend his lead. The third caution of the night came with 37 laps to go, caused by Shelby Sheedy, erasing the lead Weiss had built on Whitener and Hughes. After the restart, Whitener and Hughes continued their battle for second, soon joined by Tyler Millwood and former series champion and current points leader Jimmy Thomas rounding out the top five.
As the field stretched out around "The Mag," Weiss navigated through lapped traffic, putting more laps in the books. A long green-flag run ended with 68 laps complete as Jimmy Thomas went to the top side, bringing out the yellow with only 7 laps remaining in the main event. Weiss led the field back to green, and Whitener attacked the top side of the speedway, but couldn't find the momentum he needed, allowing Corey Neil Jr. to slip by and dropping Whitener to third. Weiss pulled away from the three-car battle for second and cruised to his fourth career Rogers-Dabbs Performance Parts Crate Racin' USA Dirt Late Model Series victory of the season and his third straight $10,000 payday.
