A Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racing USA Dirt Late Model Series event scheduled April 28-29, 2023, at Deep South Speedway in Loxley, Ala., has been postponed due to inclement weather.
The Deep South 100 at the high-banked track was scheduled to pay $10,000 to the winner, and would have been the third event on a 24-race schedule for the Adam Stewart-managed touring series. The series has averaged over 50 cars per race for its first two events of the season.
Rain has been falling at the 4/10-mile facility for two days, and a forecast calling for additional bad weather during the upcoming weekend has forced track and series officials to make their decision. A suitable makeup date will be discussed in the next few days, and should a potential date be found, announcements will be made.
"We had to make this decision because it's already raining down there and has been for a couple days, and there's two or three more inches predicted overnight," Stewart said. "Heading into the weekend the forecast is not favorable for racing, even though we hated to make this choice. Deep South Speedway last hosted our series three years ago, and we were very much looking forward to a return. They have made a bunch of improvements to what was already a fine facility, and we were looking forward to showcasing our brand of motorsports."
Cody Overton of Evans, Ga., has emerged as the early-season points leader in his Excel Racing Chassis machine, and holds a two-point edge over Mark Whitener [180-178] in the standings, while the rest of the top five is filled out by Trynt Lloyd [158], Jason Welshan [158] and Blake Craft [150].
The series’ next event for Chevrolet Performance 604-powered machines will take place May 6 at Whynot Motorsports Park near Meridian, Miss., where the traveling group will make a long-anticipated return to the Rodney and Cassie Wing-promoted facility. A practice session will take place May 5 at the racy quarter-mile oval, and times for that will be announced.
