Eastaboga, AL – The Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Winter Shootout teams up with the DIRTcar Pro Late Models to tackle the “World’s Fastest 1/2 Mile”, Volusia Speedway Park, as part of the fourth annual DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals Wednesday January 18th through 21st. The fourth running of the event will see some format changes for the DIRTcar/Crate Racin’ USA Late Models powered by Chevrolet Performance 604 Circle track engines. The event will also feature the World of Outlaw Late Models in action each night in conjunction with the 604 and local 602 divisions.
Action will begin with an optional Practice Session on Wednesday January 18th from 6 until 9 PM, before racing beings on Thursday. Thursday and Friday racing action will see a change of pace with competitors signing in for pill-draw and then placed into one of two Hot Lap/Qualifying groups. Drivers will be qualifying against the drivers in their group, with a maximum of eight cars on the track at a time. Driver’s best time will be used to line up for Qualifying Features on both Thursday and Friday, number of Features to be determined based on car count.
Qualifying Features will be 20 laps, and pay $1,500-to-win each, with each driver earning points according to their finish in the Qualifying Features, which will give drivers a final point total at the end of Friday’s events. Crate Racin’ USA Winter Shootout Series points will be awarded to drivers for their best finish in the Thursday and Friday Qualifying Features, and then for the $10,000 Finale on Saturday, essentially counting the best two out of three finishes for the weekend.
Following Friday, the top-20 drivers in points, are locked into the $10,000 Championship Feature on Saturday. Drivers not in the top-20 will be staggered into Last Chance Showdown on Saturday. A redraw will take place to set a portion of the Championship Feature, which will be explained at Saturday’s mandatory drivers meeting.
Last Chance Showdown events will take another determined number of cars into the Championship Feature, followed by the addition of provisional starters at officials’ discretion. Once the lineups are set, the Pro Late Models will run 30 laps for $10,000-to-win, while the 602 Late Models will contest 20 laps for a $3,000 grand prize.
Every driver who starts at Last Chance Showdown or Feature will earn points toward the overall standings on Saturday, awarding the driver with the most points after the Championship Features with a special trophy as DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals champion of their respective division.
