Weather Forecast Dooms Cochran’s Doubleheader Weekend

Weather Forecast Dooms Cochran’s Doubleheader Weekend

EASTABOGA, Ala. — A dismal and deteriorating weather forecast has caused cancellation of a Newsome Raceway Parts Crate Racin’ USA Dirt Late Model Series doubleheader during the upcoming Labor Day weekend at Cochran Motor Speedway.

The twin events were slated to be held Sat., Sept. 3, and Sun., Sept. 4, at the Chris and Joni Martin-owned speedplant, but a high percentage of rain predicted to arrive in the area caused track and series officials to collectively make a decision to postpone the weekend. The two events will not be rescheduled.

“We continue to have weather-related issues a few of our recent events, and we sure hate to lose these two races,” said series director Adam Stewart. “There’s not much we can do except cast a hard frown in the direction of the weather forecasts, and keep moving forward. We’ll look forward to working with the track, and having them on our schedule again. It’s a great, well-kept facility and we really enjoy our visits, so we’ll now turn our attention to the annual Crate Racin’ USA World Championship on Thanksgiving weekend at the same facility.”

The series has 11 completed races in the record books, and nine different winners in those events. Jason Welshan of Maryville, Tenn., is the current leader in the chase for the $10,000 series championship with a 98-point edge [968-870] over Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga. Knowles is still looking for his first victory of the season, while Welshan has claimed the checkered flag on three occasions, and is the only multiple race winner on the series.

Competitors will turn their attention to the touring circuit’s Sept. 17 date at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Summertown, Tenn., which is the annual $5,011-to-win King of the Hill event that is now part of the already-scheduled $2,011-to-win Melissa Cothran Memorial for Crate Racin’ USA Modified Sportsman competitors at the steeply-banked oval.

“We’re sure not going to stop trying, but it’d be nice to get a little cooperation from the weather,” Stewart said. “All we can do now is look forward to our next scheduled event at Thunderhill Raceway Park. It’s a place that provides some great racing, and we’re expecting a good field of entries. We’re looking forward to our visit.”
